L Haoua Review

by Richie Unterberger

Recorded live in Switzerland in 1994, this lies in the midpoint between the group's debut album and their techno-heavy production with Bill Laswell. Includes material from both of their first two studio albums, as well as some songs that aren't found on these releases. It's still a bit too electronically percussive for its own good. But the band's Moroccan roots--especially in the whirling dervish vocals and flitting violin--does come through, and the sound is pretty good for an act that sometimes relies a lot on programming and effects.
