What is striking from this first CD by the Japanese shakuhachi master Yoshio Kurahashi is the simplicity of his playing. There are no extras. In fact, all his pieces are typical of the shakuhachi repertoire; you can hear most of them on many other records. But in his case, you hear a pure and bare music, which reaches listeners directly. The simplicity of his playing denotes a deep musical spirituality. Among an increasing number of CDs by shakuhachi players, either Japanese or Westerner, Kurahashi undoubtedly stands out. A name to remember.
