This unusual CD is the joint effort of koto player Brett Larner and Seth Misterka, known for his highly creative saxophone work. For this short recording, Misterka took raw, unedited improvised sounds of the koto and "sculpted" them for release. The "music" often borders on noise, with loud blasts ringing and then fading to nothingness, often repeating patterns in a mesmerizing fashion. At times esoteric and mysterious (with an almost new age feel), but more often annoying and clamorous, the six solo koto offerings are not easy listening. Even so, they reflect an original, if not easily accessible, attempt to forge original sounds. Misterka adds his guitar for one cut and the electric guitar for another. The results sometimes enervate, but one is just as likely to be confused and dazed.
