The Stan Kenton Orchestra, on a 1953 tour of Europe, arrived in Weisbaden, Germany exhausted and a bit late. However, the music quickly revived the band members, and the results can be heard on this small-label CD. The recording quality is quite good, allowing listeners to sample a typical Kenton program from the era. No major new works were premiered, but such talented players as altoist Lee Konitz, tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims and trombonist Frank Rosolino are well featured; trumpeter Conte Candoli, altoist Dave Shildkraut and trombonist Bob Burgess are also heard from. June Christy, back with the band after a three-year absence, has five enjoyable vocals. The enthusiastic crowd obviously inspired the musicians, and this set should please all Kenton fans.
