This double LP is perfectly done. The great tenor Gene Ammons is heard on his earliest sessions as a leader and each of the six four-song sessions are reissued here complete, in chronological order and with extensive liner notes by Dan Morgenstern. In addition his one session with his father (the legendary boogie-woogie pianist Albert Ammons) is also included; how many listeners have noticed that Albert's original "Hiroshima" has the same chord changes as the standard "Nagasaki"? Throughout these performances Gene Ammons shows that his tone and style were already largely fully formed. Highlights include the original version of "Red Top" (which is heard both with and without the later overdubbed vocal), several heated jams and some warm ballads. This two-fer is highly recommended although it will be hard to find.
