The first of two Swaggie LPs to document some of the classic performances of violinist Joe Venuti and guitarist Eddie Lang, this is filled with exciting performances that mostly do not duplicate the recordings on the Columbia two-LP set Stringing the Blues. Venuti and Lang (sometimes with the assistance of pianist Frank Signorelli) are heard on all of the takes that exist of "Black and Blue Bottom," "Stringing the Blues," "Doin' Things" and "Wild Cat." In addition, Venuti's Blue Four (with either Jimmy Dorsey on trumpet, clarinet, alto and baritone, C-melody saxophonist Frankie Trumbauer, bass-saxophonist Adrian Rollini or baritonist Pete Pumiglio) are heard on nine additional selections. The music is wonderful small-group New York jazz of the late '20s, played with high musicianship and plenty of spirit.
