Clarinetist Jimmy Hamilton spent most of his prime years as a star soloist with Duke Ellington's Orchestra. He only had infrequent chances to lead his own recording sessions, including two albums in 1954 for Urania. This LP reissue consists of four quintet numbers (during which Hamilton is the only horn), plus four octet numbers with trumpeter Ernie Royal and tenorman Lucky Thompson. Other than "Salute fo Charlie Parker" and the clarinetist's "Blues for a Princess," the music is comprised of melodic standards. The playing time is rather chintzy, but what is here is well played and swinging.
