AllMusic Review by

Although this two-track live set recorded April 15, 1969, in New Jersey (most likely at Rutgers University) is attributed on this Lone Hill Jazz release to the Woody Shaw Quintet, it was actually an Art Blakey & the Jazz Messengers date and was originally released as a Blakey album under the title Mellow Blues by Moon Records. The playing here (Shaw on trumpet and Blakey on drums with Scott Holt on bass, George Cables on piano, and Carlos Garnett on tenor sax) is a delight and full of characteristic fire, but unfortunately the recording quality is pretty poor (it may have been made by an audience member), and unless one religiously collects Shaw, Blakey, or Jazz Messengers releases, Mellow Blues/Jersey Blues is hardly a necessary purchase.
