It might be hard to think of a different way of absorbing the marvelous stories of Esther Averill then the books themselves, which with their lovely artwork and delightful stories make up something of a comfort zone for children as well as cat lovers who may have grown up in body. The superb stage performer Tammy Grimes has quite a way with this material, though, charming her way through the first story in the series, as well as the saga of "Jenny's First Party." Incidental music by Don Heckman isn't going to cause anyone to run around the block screaming in excitement, and, in fact, has been known to irritate children. But how was Heckman to know that, decades later, kids brought up on loud, booming rap music would still be into the Cat Club.
