The winner of the prestigious Jazzpar award in 1995, Tony Coe is featured on this adventurous and diverse CD with the Danish Radio Jazz Orchestra (arranged by Bob Brookmeyer, who is also heard on valve trombone) and, on three of the eight selections, with Brookmeyer in a quintet/sextet. Coe, playing very effectively on tenor (where he is influenced by Paul Gonsalves), clarinet, and soprano, is a bop-based improviser who evolved through the years to become an advanced player. In addition to several of his own originals and two by drummer Steve Arguelles, Coe performs works by Brookmeyer, Maria Schneider, and a pair of standards ("How Long Has This Been Going On" and "Fools Rush In"). This is an exciting release that rewards repeated listenings, one of Tony Coe's finest recordings to date.
