AllMusic Review by

As is often the case with Folkways LPs from the 1970s, this collection is an almost random sampling of jazz from the 1920s and '30s. Programmed by cities, the album has music from Chicago (Tiny Parham and Jabbo Smith), Birmingham (Frank Bunch's Fuzzy Wuzzies), St. Louis (Charlie Creath and Dewey Jackson), New Orleans (Sam Morgan and the New Orleans Owls), New York (Clarence Williams, Johnny Dunn and Fletcher Henderson), Cincinnati (Zack Whyte), Louisville (Clifford Hayes) and Dallas (Boots And His Buddies and Don Albert). The styles range from hot combos to early swing and the program serves as a good introduction to some of the lesser-known names although it would be preferable to have these recordings in a more complete and coherent fashion.
