Jazz Bands (1926-1930) Review

by Scott Yanow

Historical's series of LPs reissued a great deal of formerly rare material from the 1920s and early '30s. This album is particularly strong with selections from Ada Brown, Bill Brown & His Brownies, the Chocolate Dandies, Oliver Cobb, Elgar's Creole Orchestra, the Kentucky Jazz Babies, Hattie Burleson and the Original Memphis Five. Highlights include The Chocolate Dandies' "Birmingham Breakdown" and "Stardust" (the latter taken as an uptempo instrumental), and Elgar's Creole Orchestra's eerie rendition of "Nightmare." This hard-to-find LP is worth picking up by early jazz collectors.
