This CD is part of a series of three CDs by Playasound on the splendor of Japanese music. This one presents three Japanese shakuhachi players of the younger generation, the three having studied under Aoki Reibo or Katsuya Yokoyama, two of Japan's great shakuhachi masters. They offer us classical honkyoku pieces of the Zen Buddhist repertoire for solo shakuhachi, except for two pieces that are performed in duet. Honkyoku pieces are always written for solo shakuhachi, and it is only later on that a second part is added, either by the composer or another musician. A second part was added to only a few pieces, the most well-known being "Shika No Tone," the first piece on the CD and surely the most recorded piece of the repertoire. As the title of this CD suggests, this is splendid music from three excellent musicians.
