Singer Lisa Henry's debut recording features her sassy yet very musical interpretations of standards. Henry is joined by a variety of fine players from the Midwest, including pianist Joe Cartwright, keyboardist Everette DeVan, trombonist Tim Perryman and guitarist Irvin Brown. The one fault of the CD is that most of the 11 songs are overplayed standards that have already been recorded definitively many times. Certainly "Lullaby of Birdland," "Love for Sale," "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" and "Georgia On My Mind" were not in great need of being revived again. However, Henry's enthusiasm and ability to swing constantly keep the proceedings lively and moving. She is particularly rewarding on "I Only Have Eyes for You," "Straight No Chaser," "Almost Like Being In Love" and "Muddy Water." An impressive start for what should be a productive and lengthy career.
