A versatile fusion guitarist who seems comfortable with aggression and romanticism, fusionist Gijs de Lange shows considerable promise as both a composer and an improvisor on his generally impressive debut album, Intimate Journey. Drawing on such influences as Al Di Meola and Pat Metheny, de Lange keeps listeners guessing on everything from the powerful and intense "Moonflight" to the reggae-influenced "Global Heart" to "Sasha's House," a poetic number recalling Return to Forever's softer side. Not nearly as successful is the mundane "Broken Heart," which finds the Dutchman putting his jazz instincts aside and transforming himself into a run-of-the-mill adult contemporary pop singer. But thankfully, the album's instrumentals are dominant, and make it a CD with many more pluses than minuses.
