The ensemble of Richard Carr, Mike Nord, and Georg Hofmann is a slightly unusual one in that they perform free improvisations but are not shy about playing perfectly tonal, utilizing themes, and building up their improvisations melodically. Their music transports listeners to places that are far from unpleasant, even during the more heated passages. Much of the playing on In Walks Art is surprisingly gentle, with repetition, drone sections, and melodic development making the music more accessible than expected. For this project, pianist Art Maddox and saxophonist Randy Kem are added to the group and both are major assets, easily fitting into the concept. In Walks Art is a highly enjoyable and creative outing that is well worth acquiring.
