Joel Forrestor has developed a cult following from his slightly offbeat style of piano playing and writing; he's well on his way to developing the kind of sound that makes a musician instantly recognizable. His eight originals, recorded with his excellent quartet People Like Us, seem familiar yet remain unique, with an attractive quirkiness that demands repeated hearings. The pianist himself has chops to spare, but isn't hesitant to duck out completely or provide bare-bones accompaniment to the soloists. Baritone saxophonist Claire Daly's big swinging style is a major asset, and bassist Dave Hofstra and drummer Denis Charles are a capable rhythm team. Even though there are no lyrics to any of the songs, you can't listen to them with a straight face or resist bopping your head along with the great music.
