Drummer Sherrie Maricle, best known for her work leading the all female big band Diva, has also made many excellent recordings leading small groups. This now out of print CD features her leading a potent quartet in a 1991 concert in Binghamton, NY; she's joined by pianist Bill Mays, bassist Lynn Seaton, and vibraphonist Peter Appleyard. The full quartet plays a swinging version of "Cherokee" to open the date, followed by a trio version of the lovely "Day Dream" that showcases Mays' lyrical playing and Maricle's crisp brushwork. Seaton wrote the percussive "Zoom Blews," which is much in the style of Major Holley, with his grunting vocal in unison with his bowed bass. A long version of John Lewis' timeless classic "Django" has some beautiful interplay between Mays and Appleyard; while a turbo charged run through "Air Mail Special" is full of surprises. Highly recommended.
