The son of blues legend Junior Kimbrough, David Malone recorded I Got the Dog in Me at age 29, not long after serving a five-year sentence at Parchman Prison in his home state of Mississippi. It includes seven originals which he wrote while incarcerated and two of his father's songs ("Do the Romp" and "Raunchy Stuff"). Considering the fact that he wrote countless songs while locked up, it's hard to swallow the notion that these are apparently his best. There are some nice J.L. Hooker-style licks on the title cut, and there is some respectable guitar rocking on "Trying to Figure You Out," but for the most part, these tunes all sound the same. Unless you just can't get enough of the "Wang Dang Doodle" groove, this one probably won't see a second spin in your CD player.
