I Can Make It Through Review

by Larry Belanger

1998 marked the year Hilltop News released their debut album,I Can Make It Through. This is an excellent example of fine Bluegrass played with expertise and feeling.John Rittenhouse brings the hammered dulcimer into the spotlight on this album, featured on "Dulcimer Waltz'" which has an Acadian feel to it. Thirteen tracks of finely tuned songs, with classic numbers like "One Day At A Time" and the Flatt & Scruggs' tune "I Heard My Mother Call My Name" can be heard on this album. The title track "I Can Make It Through (With my eyes fixed on you),"has strong lyrical content along with a pleasant uplifting melody. The best track by far,has to be "Walk That Talk" with it's catchy lyrics and a genuine Bluegrass feel.It has a hook that will not let go of the listener,it rings on long after the needle leaves the disc. The album serves the purpose it was intended for by the artists,it put's out the message of God's word with a Bluegrass melody. All of the members get to showcase their talents, and they are truly talented musicians. If you even have a mild interest in Bluegrass or Gospel music,I can highly recommend this album. It is an uplifting and inspiring album, that may leave you anxiously searching out their next release.
