One of the most remarkable things about gypsy musicians is the way they make the traditional and folk music of the countries where they settle their own, while at the same time modifying and adapting it. Particularly with East European music, they incorporate -- even if only slightly -- modes and other musical aspects that come from their original ideas. Interestingly, in many East European countries, folk music is performed mainly by gypsy musicians. On this excellent CD, listeners hear a Hungarian gypsy, Sandor Lakatos, performing traditional Hungarian dances and songs with his gypsy band. The instruments used are typical in this part of Europe (i.e., violin, cimbalom, clarinet, guitar, and double bass).
