Swiping its name from an otherwise largely forgotten chick flick starring the Wynona Riders' titular inspiration, How to Make an American Quit is a career-spanning compilation collecting songs from their sole full-length album, 1996's J.D. Salinger, along with singles, EPs, and compilation tracks. Although it's not a complete collection, it's certainly all but the most devout fan of this not untalented but definitely third-string pop-punk band will ever want. Highlights like "No, You Suck" and the Bay Area scene anthem "Union Square" are catchy pop-punk along the lines of the Smugglers or other Lookout! Records bands, but with a more garagey sensibility closer in spirit to classic Young Fresh Fellows, but too many songs lack the lyrical smarts or melodic heft to be more than unfinished-sounding sketches.
