When one thinks of swing violin, the names Joe Venuti and Stephane Grappelli come immediately to mind. However this LP from Arhoolie's subsidiary Folklyric features three other talented violinists from the 1930s. Stuff Smith, heard on five songs with his 1936 sextet that co-starred trumpeter Jonah Jones, received a certain amount of fame but Svend Asmussen (because he remained in Europe throughout his career) is less known while Emilio Caceres (heard on four of the six titles recorded at his only early session as a leader) is completely forgotten. Caceres (featured in a trio with his brother Ernie on clarinet and baritone along with guitarist Johnny Gomez) holds his own with Smith and Asmussen on this consistently enjoyable album.
