Waking Maggie's debut is an acoustic set of traditional tunes and songs with the occasional original piece included for contrast. Centered around the hammer dulcimer playing of Andrea Harris, the fiddle of Ryan Freres and acoustic guitar of David Oplinger Waking Maggie accentuates their music with recorders, whistles, flutes and mandolin. While their strength lies in the instrumental numbers (the harmonious intro to "Mairi's Wedding" is simply beautiful) Oplinger's "Undo" is glowing in its melancholy. For a stretch of three songs in the middle portion of this album ("The Foot Stomping Set," "The WH Set" and "Epiphany") Waking Maggie superbly demonstrates their promise and skill at performing acoustic traditional music. Oplinger's finger picking in harmony with fiddle and flute accompaniment on "Crested Hens" is delectable as well. This album has its ups and down, its strengths and weaknesses but is generally a solid first effort. If Waking Maggie continues to play to their strengths their future should be productive and long lasting.
