1960s bossa nova aside, these might be the only historical reissues of any of Brazil's wonderful musical traditions. Not everything here is original -- some gaps were filled by re-recording around 1950. But the real stuff starts in 1902 and keeps right on coming. The sheer joy and variety of the music aside, it's fascinating to hear the influences and sounds change over time (a lot of jazz from the 1920s on, of course). Volume 1 runs from 1872 to 1933.
