AllMusic Review by

One of the big problems with a lot of rare soul reissue comps is the fallacy that when a single is considered to be rare it is instantaneously equated with the word "classic." Goddess' The Heart of Soul compilation follows this pattern, culling predominately obscure cuts of '80s quiet storm R&B and '70s Philly soul-styled ballads transferred from analog tapes and vinyl sources, rather than the master tapes. The songwriting quality is on par with many of their more well-known contemporaries and the production is modeled on many of the successful teams of their respected eras, but the overall sonic quality of these recordings and lack of effort to restore them leaves much to be desired. This compilation is solid with some choices cuts thrown in, but suggested only for serious collectors and enthusiasts.
