The vintage, Smiths-like tense "Hayfever" makes this an easy choice for number one single of 1993, and here's another great reason to buy this: the B-sides of "Hayfever" are done (immaculately again) by LP producer Ray Shulman, so it's safe to "say" they're outtakes from the album sessions. "Say" is more akin to the quieter flourishes of "I've Seen Everything," but the danceable, bubbling "Kangaroo Court" is fine stuff and "Skin Diving" is quiet grace. Even at their least, these Scottish, formerly ho-hum Aztec Camera wannabes now make gently tickling, supremely crafted, totally fresh-sounding singalong pop with buckets-deep sound; at their best, as on "Hayfever" and "Ask Davy," they'll make you listen over and over and over.
