Be forewarned, this one's a grower, but when it hits you, it doesn't let go. HAWK MEDICINE, Lazarus' third full-length, pulls together the strong points of previous releases--the spacious arrangements and Trevor Montgomery's snakecharming baritone--into one cohesive, striking song cycle that ranks among his best. Montgomery's voice finds common space with Jeff Buckley's, Bruce Springsteen's, and Skip Spence's, and is among the most alluring instruments in early millennial indie music. Once his voice gets drenched in reverb--as producer Jason Quever does throughout the album's 10 tracks--forget about it: Montgomery's hooks are firmly in place and there's no escaping.
