Hawaiian guitar specialists were a major influence on country steel guitar players. The music on this Yazoo LP (the exact dates are unfortunately not given but the performances are from the 1920s and '30s) ranges from jazz and blues to country and Hawaiian folk music. The 14 selections all feature brilliant Hawaiian-style guitarists and, although some listeners may have difficulty getting used to their unusual sounds, the high musicianship and impressive variety should keep one's interest. Represented are King Benny Nawahi, Sol Hoopii, Kane's Hawaiian's, Jim & Bob (for a memorable version of "By the Waters of the Minnetonka"), the Hauuleau Entertainers, Pale K. Lua ("Kohala March"), the versatile studio guitarist Roy Smeck, the Hapani Trio, Franchini & Dettborn, Master's Hawaiians and a group called King, Queen & Jack. Intriguing performances that are recommended to collectors of early American roots music.
