AllMusic Review by

In Haiku!, the jazz multi-instrumentalist Michel Dubeau plays mainly the Japanese shakuhachi. Each piece is based on a Japanese haiku (a 15-syllable poem). There are original pieces as well as arrangements (for example, a quite unusual arrangement of an old samurai song). Few haikus are recited by a male voices, while others are sung by a female voice in a traditional Japanese singing style over a jazzy background. Similar to his previous CD Gakki, you hear an adventure in sound, except that this time, because of its focus on a specific concept, you hear a music that is much more focused -- a welcome evolution from his previous one.
