The particular genius of pioneering bio-acoustician Bernie Krause is in collecting varied sounds from different natural habitats and shaping them into fascinating sound-sculptures. Playing as a continuous 30-minute program, Ocean Wonders epitomizes this approach. It begins with the sound of pounding waves, crying seagulls, brassy foghorns and the distant barking and chattering of California sea lions. After a while we drop beneath the surface to experience a remarkable array of sea mammals, fish and even snapping shrimp heard against the muffled roar of the waves above. Cooing, thumping, clicking, moaning, squeaking, wailing and booming sounds serenade us from a variety of creatures including humpback and killer whales, ocean triggerfish, long horn sculpin, Atlantic croaker and red drum fish. Eventually we are returned to the surface and lulled again by the rhythms of the waves, refreshed and enlivened by the wonders that the ocean holds.
