One of six Pickwick CDs drawn from the mid-'40s Black & White catalog, this set has a lot of valuable swing and Dixieland-oriented performances. Clarinetist Barney Bigard leads two dates, one with trumpeter Joe Thomas and tenorman Georige Auld and the other one with Thomas, a tenor player by the same name and the great pianist Art Tatum. Pianist Willie "The Lion" Smith heads a spirited Dixieland set with trumpeter Max Kaminsky and clarinetist Rod Cless while pianist Cliff Jackson's Village Cats is a particularly impressive group with trumpeter Sidney DeParis, trombonist Wilbur DeParis, Gene Sedric on tenor and the unique Sidney Bechet on soprano. There is plenty of enjoyable music on this easily recommended set.
