Platinum Disc's Greatest Summer Beach Hits is a painfully short and strangely selected collection of summery tunes, mostly. While the two from the Ventures ("Wipe Out," "Surfer Joe"), Robin Ward's "Wonderful Summer," Billy Stewart's "Summertime," and Brian Hyland's "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" certainly qualify as do the Mamas & the Papas' two ("Dancing in the Streets," "Monday, Monday") to a lesser extent, it is hard to make a case for Brian Hyland's "Sealed With a Kiss," Tommy Roe's "Shelia," or Buddy Holly's "It Doesn't Matter Anymore" as "summer beach hits." It is also weak to have multiple selections by artists when there are so many others who fit the bill. So write this disc off as failing to live up to its title -- an entertaining failure but one all the same.
