AllMusic Review by

An excellent budget-priced anthology of some of Shirley Bassey's lesser-known hits, THE GREAT SHIRLEY BASSEY is refreshing in that it includes neither of her two biggest US hits, the James Bond themes "Goldfinger" and "Diamonds Are Forever." Instead, the collection focuses on British and European hits which didn't reach the same level of success across the Atlantic, including torchy covers of US hits like "I (Who Have Nothing)," and "For All We Know."

Bassey's bold, brassy voice is well suited to larger than life numbers such as "I Am What I Am," "Big Spender," and a spectacularly melodramatic reading of Stephen Sondheim's "Send in the Clowns." For those drawn to the Bassey oeuvre by her renditions of songs like "Goldfinger," this is a solid collection.
