In the years before ESPN and SpeedVision, Riverside Records took it upon themselves to document the sports racing world via LP form, issuing a series of recordings that compiled driver interviews, racetrack announcements, and, most importantly, the tire-squealing action of competitive auto racing as it happened. From a historical standpoint, these records are invaluable -- at least in the U.S., Grand Prix racing has never merited the archival care received by more popular sports like football or baseball, but few sports are as aurally visceral, with the revving of engines and the Doppler effect of racecars zooming by creating a you-are-there realism. This particular release, which captures the first Grand Prix road race on U.S. soil in Sebring, FLA, in December 1959, is one of the most historically important recordings in Riverside's multi-volume series, and assuming you can find it, a good place to start your collection.
