With the completion of the Anthology series, if any more Beatles studio outtakes surface, we can expect them to emerge on discs such as this one, which are more like hunks of raw footage than anything approaching a finished script. This is nearly an hour's worth of White Album-era rehearsal/alternate takes, in stunning, release-quality fidelity. Most listeners will find it tough work, however, as it's centered around no less than 14 alternate takes of "Blackbird." As lovely a song as that is, these are minor variations from what you actually hear on the finished version on The White Album. Elsewhere, there's an interesting alternate of "Hey Jude" with a rougher, unfinished feel, marginally different versions of "Dear Prudence," incidental studio chat, and some diddling around on "Mother Nature's Son." This is great for those of us whose interest is deep enough to wish we could have heard all these rehearsal tapes that Mark Lewisohn wrote about in The Beatles Recording Sessions; basically, these are a few of those tapes. But most listeners will be bored by hearing so many similar versions one after the other.
