A veteran from the 1950s who still plays in prime form, pianist Gene DiNovi has a flexible style that ranges from swing to hard bop. Teamed with bassist Neil Swainson and drummer Terry Clarke, he performs two originals (including the boppish "Hangin' Round Yard"), a pair of obscurities and seven familiar standards. It is particularly intriguing hearing DiNovi explore the 1920s classic "Blues My Naughty Sweetie Gives to Me" and dig into the moody "Golden Earrings." This release from the Japanese M&J label (originally on Marshmallow) is one of his better recent sessions and is easily recommended to fans of the straight-ahead jazz piano.
