Gold: Greatest Hits/20th Century Masters -- The Millenium Collection combines the two Carpenters retrospectives into a double-disc collection that gathers most of the group's biggest hits, such as "We've Only Just Begun," "Superstar," "Yesterday Once More," and "(They Long to Be) Close to You." However, neither Gold nor 20th Century Masters were especially comprehensive Carpenters collections on their own, and putting them together doesn't necessarily make them any more complete. This two-fer does feature more of the group's best-known songs, such as the number one hits "Please Mr. Postman" and "Top of the World," in the same place, but it still doesn't offer as many hits as the single-disc Singles 1969-1981 does. Of course, songs like "Only Yesterday," "Bless the Beasts and the Children," and "Goodbye to Love" will be familiar to fans as well, but overall Gold/20th Century Masters just doesn't provide enough hits to make it a good best-of package or enough album tracks or rarities to make it appealing to completists.
