Most of the selections on this obscure but enjoyable LP feature tenor saxophonist Pete Christlieb's 1982 quartet, a unit also including pianist Alan Broadbent, bassist Jim Hughart and drummer Michael Whited. Mike Melvoin (on organ) and drummer Donald Bailey (doubling on harmonica) make colorful guest appearances. Christlieb and company perform three standards ("Gone with the Wind," "Detour Ahead" and Gigi Gryce's "Minority") along with a trio of his complex originals. The music is largely straightahead and Christlieb constantly shows just how powerful a player he is despite his lack of fame.
