Godspell is one of many musicals to have a basis in religious material. Based on the Gospel according to St. Matthew, the musical consists of two lead characters, Jesus and Judas, and a number of street transient/chorus members with no names. Usually identified with brightly dressed youthful cast members and an infectious score, Godspell follows Jesus' final days in an '70s style "updated" manner. A film version of Godspell is available, and was released in 1973. This understudy cast recording is from the 1990s revival and contains some fine performances.
