Ghosts & Goblins Review

by Timothy Monger

Named after an in-flight catering service and boasting a well-traveled captain, Sky Chefs is the project of singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Dale Nicholls, who formerly found critical success leading the indie pop band Spy Island. When Nicholls debuted Sky Chefs in 2016 it was still largely a bedroom project featuring an array of guest players to prop up his wordy indie pop epistles. Though similar in musical brand, the group's second offering is a far more band-oriented affair, having been recorded live in just two days at producer Chris Schlarb's Big Ego studios in California. More straightforward in approach and naturally looser in vibe, Ghosts & Goblins is still a melting pot of smartly crafted guitar-based pop that relies on Nicholls' signature songwriting style. From the bouncy boy-girl harmonies of the title cut to the fuzzed-out horn-assisted "Lucite Wands," it's also a lot of fun.
