AllMusic Review by

Get Up and Dance is the debut album from the Waena Boyz, a Jawaiian (Hawaiian reggae) band from Maui that's been running the local circuits for half a decade and has more recently moved into the status of opening act for larger reggae acts that come through the islands. The music is largely basic dancehall reggae with a positive message, often religiously based. What becomes a more innovative factor is the inclusion of thicker beats and hip-hop scratching, as well as the ubiquitous keyboard riff from American R&B, all of which have already been used heavily on the Jamaican scene for years, but are slightly fresher on the Hawaiian circuits. The band does a fine job with the music, never really making a shining highlight, but keeping a solid groove throughout, offsetting overly simplistic lyrics with catchy riffs. While not producing anything particularly noteworthy (especially if viewed in the giant shadow of the great Israel Kamakawiwo'ole), they do produce a solid effort. It's worth hearing at least once, though it could become tiresome on repetition.
