The Georgie Auld big band of 1944-46 has generally been totally overlooked in jazz history books due to its formation during the period when the swing era was ending. This first of two LPs put out by Discovery on their Musicraft subsidiary has 14 valuable performances by the fine orchestra. Among Auld's many interesting sidemen are Dizzy Gillespie (who guests on the first two sessions and takes notable solos on "In the Middle" and "Co-Pilot"), Al Killian, Errol Garner, Joe Albany, Serge Chaloff and Al Porcino (excellent on "Jump Georgie"). Auld (playing tenor, alto and soprano) consistently distinguishes himself, and even with a few forgettable vocals by Patti Powers, Lynn Stevens and one by Auld himself, the music (based in swing but looking toward bop) is quite enjoyable.
