Georgia String Bands (1928-1930) Review

by Scott Yanow

All 17 selections on this CD (music leased from the Austrian Document label) were recorded in Atlanta during 1928-1930. The string bands usually feature banjo and guitar with occasional violin and plenty of vocals. This disc has the complete output from the team of Pink Anderson & Simmie Dooley (four selections), Henry Williams & Eddie Anthony (two songs), Lonnie Coleman (also just two numbers), Macon Ed & Tampa Joe (eight selections), and the lone side (which was previously unreleased) by Brothers Wright & Williams (who may actually have been Macon Ed & Tampa Joe under a pseudonym). The music is mostly good-time with occasional lowdown blues and plenty of spirit. Nothing essential, but overall these performances give one a good flavor of what blues and country music sounded like in Atlanta in the late '20s.
