The Funky Monkey Babys are a powerful, joyous element in modern Japanese pop, combining humor, upbeat rhythms, basic summertime chord progressions, and light rapping into a coherent whole. By the time they put out this two-disc greatest-hits compilation, however, they'd only released three full-length albums, making two of every three songs a "greatest hit." The bar is a little bit low, perhaps. Nonetheless, the songs come fast and remarkably smoothly here. The energy level is constantly high -- the group only very rarely takes on a ballad -- and uniformly well produced. These are exciting, happy songs throughout, with nary a minor chord to be heard. The sound can become a bit monotonous over time to all but the most energetic and hyperactive of listeners, but it's a decent product. Those who already have one or two of the Funky Monkey Babys albums likely don't have much need for this one, as it's mostly redundant to the existing catalog. Newcomers might not do badly to grab this one rather than the individual albums, however.
