Funky '69 Review

by Andrew Hamilton

Toddlin' Town Records was a spin-off of Chicago's OneDerful, and Mar-V-Lus labels, companies that recorded some of the funkiest vibes to come out of Chi-Town. The ten sides comprise 26 minutes of some powerful funk and soul performed by Alvin Cash, the Five Dutones, Otis Clay and Bull & the Matadors. The Five Dutones', from St. Louis, MO, classic, "Shake a Tail Feather," still gets spins today and has been featured on a popular television commercial. Otis Clay's gospel-soul inspired voice lays it on the line on "Flame in Your Heart." Alvin Cash, who scored with "Twine Time," is represented here on "Alvin's Bag," a typical Cash track which borrowed style from numbers by Andre Williams. Bull & the Matador's "Funky Judge" is a slow, churning slab of soul; a cross between the sound the Contours and Shorty Long recorded at Motown. A CD of Toddlin' Town's best is way over due, as you'll be hard pressed to find this LP.
