Fouwe is a very strong album by one of Kassav's noted vocalists. The musical lineup is made up of some Kassav's members and other French Antillean superstars like Ronald Rubinel and Edith Lefel. Jean-Philippe Marthely's voice is very distinctive and lends itself to both up-tempo zouk and ballads. The songs on this album are mainly up-tempo zouk with punch and drive -- there is no filler here. The zouk performed here has beef and power. The solo albums of the members of Kassav inevitably take on the personality of the featured artist. In this case, Jean-Philippe Marthely's voice is used to great effectiveness. When the swing kicks in, he is up to the task of taking things to a higher level. "Fouwe," "Amor," "Si Se Taw," "Ti Chapp," and the wicked "Dangere" are all straight-ahead powerhouse zouk. Highly recommended.
