A full-length, triple-vinyl/CD collaboration between lyricist Bas-1 (pronounced Boss-swan) and beat-maker/producer Fanatik, For the Mentally Astute: Theory of a Throw Up (released on Fanatik's own Heratik label) follows two introductory singles taken from this recording. Representing a self-proclaimed new style in hip-hop, "Elemental" is comprised of the four core elements of the genre, MC'ing, DJ'ing, B-boy'ing, and Graffiti-writing, all key components to the culture noted within their music and packaged throughout the product. An intellectual recording both in its broken, cerebral beats as well as in Bas' inquisitive subject manner, Fanatik's work with Planet Asia, Rasco, and as a Stones Throw solo artist comes through in the overall maturity of the production, with the aesthetic rocking an old school comportment. For the amount of scratching and twisting beats, For the Mentally Astute emits an essence of improvisation that retains tremendous sturdiness. Though while the narrative abilities Bas demonstrates are outstanding and his viewpoints worthy of a focused ear, the victorious artistic achievement performed on this record is hands-down the instrumental beneath.
