Basil Poledouris' most violent and gruesome entry in the modern sword and sorcery genre he virtually defines, Flesh & Blood suffers from its too-close similarities to his earlier masterpiece Conan the Barbarian, although fans of his savage orchestral approach will find much to appreciate here. Poledouris' brass-dominated action themes are undeniably impressive, brought to life with visceral intensity by the London Symphony Orchestra. For all its brawn, however, the music also boasts its share of brains, with an epic scale and brazen wit perfectly matched to the genre. It's nevertheless difficult to shake the feeling you've heard this music before, however, and indeed Flesh & Blood is essentially Conan on (more) steroids/ If that sounds like a ringing endorsement, this soundtrack is definitely for you.
