Simply put, this is a solidly compiled and beautifully sequenced collection of highlights of the early solo career of Paco de Lucia. Fans of DeLucia's later work should be forewarned, this is not nuevo flamenco, which he helped to pioneer. This is raw, hardcore flamenco music, filled with the sound of handclaps, grainy, wild vocalists, and dancers. It is stunning and authentic. This is where the great passion, heartbreak, eros, and sadness all come from. While there is no denying DeLucia's incredible prowess on the guitar, his place here was in accompanying a singer, in most cases. When one is not overcome by the nearly unbearable amount of emotional beauty here, the listener can hear the guitarist pushing the singer harder, as well as the clappers and dancers and stretching the from to the breaking point. This is where the great innovation started. Fantastic.
